In spite of all that has happened, Hastings SL is a little town with faith in its own future. The region’s police academy, the airport and a medical training centre are all nearby. The school-children are neatly turned out and make the moist of the educational opportunities, in spite of severe shortages of the most basic books and equipment.
For a graphic insight into the Sierra Leone situation, including the plight of the amputees who were maimed by the rebels during the civil war, see Thor Taylor’s brilliant website. Thor is a professional photographer who volunteered to go out to Hastings to cover the twinning visit. He filmed footage for the BBC, and has used his photographic skills to illustrate the trip to the community back home in a presentation.

Thanks, Mohamed. We hope that Sierra Leoneans all over the world, especially those that know Hastings SL, will keep an eye on the Friendship Link’s website. If anyone has a little spare cash, or an idea for raising some in their community, we’d be glad to hear from you, as we need funds to finish ‘putting the heart back into Hastings’ with the community building before we can go on looking with the villagers at their other needs.
