Local businessman Dain Jensen (and one of the Link’s three Patrons) is about to brave the desert heat to raise funds for our Twin Town, Hastings in Sierra Leone. Dain, Director of Kiley’s Karpets is a committed fundraiser and has raised thousands for local charities running in marathons and half marathons and recently climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of another local charity.
His latest challenge is the “Marathon des Sables” in aid of the Hastings Sierra Leone Friendship Link. The Marathon des Sables is a gruelling six-day, 251 km ultramarathon, which is the equivalent of six regular marathons. The longest single stage is 91 km long. Temperatures often exceed 50 degrees centigrade. It is widely regarded as the toughest foot race on earth. http://www.marathondessables.co.uk/
Dain who is busily training for the event said “I’d like, if I can, to try and raise a bit of funds for a local Hastings charity that encourage links and supports our sister town Hastings in Sierra Leone. They help support, amongst other things, the local health centre, which is always stretched, looking after 20,000 people in an area with one of the highest infant mortality rates, and of course recently devastated by the Ebola virus.”
Asked if it was perhaps a step too far Dain replied “It’s a bit of a challenge, but at least the training has resulted in 3.5 stone of weight loss! The Friendship Link works hard to help the community in our sister town improve their lives, providing better health care facilities, improving education and reducing poverty by helping them create their own livelihoods. If people can spare, even a couple of pounds, it can make a difference. Every penny counts and is much appreciated.”
