Grim news from Freetown – How can we help?

Everyone will have seen pictures of the terrible floods and landslip in Freetown. At least 400 deaths are reported, with many more left homeless.  Although the landslip has not directly affected Hastings, the town was already having to cope with torrential rains. Now there are the knock-on effects, as people from Freetown are displaced. The Link has experience of working with really good NGOs in the area, including Build on Books. The Link’s Trustees have agreed that we’ll do whatever we can to help, especially as the developing situation affects Hastings. Richard moved quickly to set up an appeal for funds via BT’s MyDonate facility. If you feel you can help with a donation, however small, please have a look at  https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/hastingssierraleonefriendshiplink . You may rest assured that every penny we raise goes directly to Hastings Sierra Leone to fund the disaster relief effort.

Obviously, our fundraising in the next few weeks will be crucial. The next event is our Music Quiz Night at St Paul’s School, Horntye Road, Hastings. 7pm – £5 per head, bring your own refreshments. Please get a team up if you can, or just come along and join a table!  If you’d like to book a table in advance, ring me, Robin, on 01424 436603  or email secretary.hslfl@gmail.com

Thanks!

  1. Hello, I’m currently on a train to Hastings (!)reading What’sApp messages from a dear friend who lives near Juba – not that far from Hastings really. Last night, he shared a space in his home with friends whose parents lost their lives in the flooding around Juba. Because it’s the rainy season he is currently out of work (he works in construction!) It’s his compassion and generosity of spirit rather than exonomic wealth which has enabled him to share his food and clothes with them. Please let me know what I can do to send some critical support to local communities like those in Juba and Goderich who are struggling to support their grieving friends and family members.
    With warm wishes,
    Cristina Bennett

    1. How worrying for you, having personal friends caught up in all this. You might like to use the donate site we’ve set up at https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/hastingssierraleonefriendshiplink . We’re working through our ex-pat friends here and our friends in Hastings SL, to establish who needs help most urgently, and how to get it to them. We’d be very grateful for your support. Naturally, our focus is necessarily on Hastings. You might prefer to look at Build on Books (I suppose they started as an educational charity, but their scope is much wider now – see http://www.buildonbooks.com). You could contact Lori Spragg at lori@buildonbooks.com, who may be able to help you to get cash, say, to a particular area of Freetown. Do let me know how you get on.
